ABOUT THE ART
Soothing hues surround a sleepy subject in a limited edition print by Asuka Anastacia Ogawa.
Paintings by Ogawa often feature almond-eyed, dark-skinned children – looking right at you. She draws inspiration from her Japanese and Afro-Brazilian heritage, using mysterious figures and scenes to set out her vision for a world without social division.
Sleepy imagines a moment of peace. Calm and content, a figure rests their head gently on a table. Like in all of her paintings, Ogawa uses a limited palette of subdued colours to enchanting effect.
Ogawa worked closely with printmakers at Make-Ready in London to ensure these colours were precisely replicated in her print.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Asuka Anastacia Ogawa’s spare paintings feature a cast of androgynous, doll-like children with dark skin and piercing almond eyes. Ogawa sets them against solid pastel fields or flattened dreamlike settings that recall her familial homelands of Japan and rural Brazil. The artist approaches each canvas with a child’s sense of wonder and curiosity; rather than working with a specific theme in mind, she intuitively draws from her own memories and experiences—and from her ancestors’ beauty, strength, and struggles. Ogawa completed her BFA in painting at Central Saint Martins in 2015. Since then, she has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, and London. Her work has been acquired by fellow painters Rashid Johnson, Mark Grotjahn, and Vaughn Spann. Ogawa was featured in the 2020 edition of The Artsy Vanguard.
