Overnight the museum was transformed into a menagerie of Unnatural History – fishfingers swimming in a gold-fish bowl, hot-dogs and chicken nuggets. Paintings were placed in amongst the historic collections of Old Masters, sculptures and other pieces dotted around throughout the museum displays. The main entrance was transformed into a sculpture hall, accompanied by a burnt out ice-cream van that pumped out an eerie sound-track of warped tunes, whilst a giant ice-cream melted on its roof. Before long, people queued around the block to get into the exhibition, some as long as seven hours just to be part of this unique phenomenon. Over 100 works by the artist – most of which had not been shown before – were displayed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0474/5546/9718/products/banksy-vs-bristol-museum-copper-275229.jpg?v=1601524903
the-fifth-element
The Fifth Element

Dimensions: 24 x 36 inches

Medium: Screen print on thick, white, 300gsm fine art paper.

Provenance: Hand-numbered in pencil bottom left. Since its inception in 1999, FAILE is known for their pioneering use of wheatpasting and stenciling in the increasingly established arena of street art, and for their explorations of duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage. During this time, FAILE adapted its signature mass culture-driven iconography to a wide array of media, from wooden boxes and window pallets to more traditional canvas, prints, sculptures, stencils, multimedia installation, and prayer wheels. While FAILE's work is constructed from found visual imagery, and blurs the line between “high” and “low” culture, recent exhibitions demonstrate an emphasis on audience participation, a critique of consumerism, and the incorporation of religious media and architecture into their work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0474/5546/9718/products/sweet-sins-brooklyn-edition-113742.jpg?v=1601534590
city-bathers
City Bathers

Dimensions: 13.5 x 33.5 inches

Medium: Serigraph print on 300gsm fine art paper.

Provenance: Hand-signed, titled, and numbered by artist. Her style has its roots in Naïve art. Naïve art has no past and no future. It captures the “now”. Whereas the trained artist cannot ignore the art of his predecessors and contemporaries, naïve artists work as if on a desert island, creating images of the world around them mingled with their imagination, without the barrier of tradition. The art of Paula McArdle springs from a sense of joy and bemusement of the world around her. Sketching wherever she goes, she translates what she sees into her language of imagery, leading us gently into her insight into the curious and sometimes ungainly figures which people her world. He affixes mosaic images of characters from the 1970s video game “Space Invaders" in cities around the world. Once a work is completed, Invader records it as an "invasion" and creates accompanying maps and reference books to indicate the location of each piece. Invader began these urban, outdoor installations in Paris in 1998, and continued to "invade" 31 other cities in France, followed by an additional 22 cities across Europe. Currently, cities in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia are also home to examples of Invader's work.

The mosaics are made using weather-resistant tiles, which represent the pixels used for graphics in early video and computer games. In addition to mosaics, Invader creates similarly pixelated works using Rubik’s Cubes. His work is included in the traveling exhibition Beautiful Losers, which started at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center and will be traveling through 2009 throughout the US and Europe, including his largest museum show to date, which will be held at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dimensions: 8.25 x 23.6 inches / 21 x 60 cm

Medium: Offset lithograph. Map of the French Riviera invasion by Space Invader.

Provenance: Comes with gallery Certificate of Authenticity

Edition: Limited edition of 1000

Year: 2007

Condition: New

Notes: Brand new Invasion map by French street artist Invader showing the 35 firsts mosaics that appeared on the French Riviera back in 2007.

ARTIST BIO

Invader (French, b.1969), also known as Space Invader, is an Urban artist originally based in Paris. He initially garnered fame for his grafitti, which combines spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor. His work first began appearing on walls in and around Bristol and London’s Shoreditch district during the mid-1990s, and he has since gone on to place images on the sides of corporate buildings, billboards, and the Israeli West Bank wall.

The unveiling of a new Banksy works often incorporates pranks or performance. Banksy, the pseudonym adopted by the artist, guards his privacy and the details of his life remain largely unknown to the public. He initially garnered fame for his graffiti, which combines spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor.

After that happened it left me feeling inadequate in my life. I needed something more, my heart wasn't in animation nor school anymore. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration in 1996. After graduation, KAWS briefly worked for Disney as a freelance animator painting backgrounds. He also contributed to the animated series 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug. He began his career as a graffiti artist growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey. Later moving to New York City in the 1990s, KAWS started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booth advertisements. These reworked advertisements were at first left alone, lasting for up to several months, but as KAWS’ popularity skyrocketed, the ads became increasingly sought after. KAWS has also participated in other commercial collaborations with Nigo for A Bathing Ape, Jun “Jonio” Takahashi for Undercover, Michael "Mic" Neumann for Kung Faux, snowboard projects with Burton, and sneakers with Nike and Vans. His most recent collaboration was with Comme des Garçons. As of August 2010, it is reported that Kaws has designed a limited edition bottle for Dos Equis, a Mexican beer brand. Recent solo exhibitions include OriginalFake at the Bape Gallery in Tokyo (2003) where his sculpture "Wonderful World" sold for $400,000.[citation needed] KAWS has been periodically showing both paintings and products at Colette in Paris since 1999.
