ABOUT THE ARTIST

Street artist, DEFER, amalgamates the urban landscape and the realm of fine art. Alex Kizu, aka DEFER, gives Art of Protest a reach back to the early origins of street art.

Defer transcends his youth in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, to share the influences of the street art scenes progression from his own murals, to fine art canvases and signed limited edition prints.

As a pioneer member of the first generation of LA Graffiti crews, K2S, STN and KGB, Kizu’s influence on the Los Angeles graffiti movement is profound. Edified by early New York graffiti, and more importantly, the neighbourhood “placaso” style, indigenous to LA; Defer culminates these experiences to define a unique internationalist genre.

DEFER’s typographic work is viewed as lyrical and beautiful. Also known as a handstyle, this specific expression speaks to the credibility of the original graffiti crews in Los Angeles and now bridges to a larger audiences globally through his fine art exhibitions.

Currently Defer creates paintings that incorporate Japanese, Islamic, and Medieval forms within his handstyle resulting in exquisite art for all. The mural in York, created to celebrate the opening of the Art of Protest Gallery, is built around the historical dates, terms and names associated with the ancient city.
