ARTIST BIO

Josh Sperling creates colorful, shaped canvases that walk the line between painting, sculpture, and design. To make his three-dimensional works, Sperling fashions intricate plywood support structures, over which canvas is stretched and painted. Popping off the walls, Sperling’s pieces draw on light and shadow to create an even greater illusion of depth. His use of bright, clashing colors and organic shapes and squiggles bring to mind the work of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly and draw from the vocabulary of 1960s and ’70s Minimalism, Pop art, Googie architecture —a futuristic style evocative of car culture and Space Age design —and Memphis furniture. The artist’s background in furniture-making and graphic design also influences his practice. Sperling’s work is included in the public collections of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Arsenal Contemporary Art Center in Montreal.
